The section organizes annual scientific conferences for the exchange of research results and issues materials from the conference. SKAD is a member of the International Federation of Classification Societies (IFCS).

History:
Between October 23–25, 1996, a scientific conference entitled “Classification and Data Analysis – Theory and Applications” was held at the “Ondraszek” Holiday House in Ustroń-Jaszowiec. The conference was organized by the University of Economics in Katowice and the Classification and Data Analysis Section of the Polish Statistical Association (PTS).

This conference marked the tenththus a jubileescientific meeting devoted to classification and data analysis. The first five conferences were organized by the Wrocław University of Economics under the patronage of the Committee on Statistics and Econometrics of the Polish Academy of Sciences. The first conference took place in 1979 in Szklarska Poręba, and the fifth in 1987 in Zachełmie.

Inspired by Professors Zdzisław Hellwig, Kazimierz Zając, and Józef Pociecha, a proposal was made in 1988 to establish a nationwide Taxonomic Section within the Polish Statistical Association. As a result of actions taken in this regard, the Main Board of the Polish Statistical Association decided on November 9, 1988, to establish the Taxonomic Section of the PTS. The Section organized a scientific conference titled “Taxonomy – Theory and Its Applications” on September 27–28, 1989, in Mogilany near Kraków.

In 1992, the name of the PTS Taxonomic Section was changed to the Classification and Data Analysis Section of the PTS. On June 1, 1992, the Section’s Board submitted an application for membership in the International Federation of Classification Societies (IFCS). At that time, the Section had 33 members.

The next three scientific conferences organized by the Classification and Data Analysis Section were held in Karpacz (October 13–15, 1993), in Kraków (September 28, 1994), and in Szklarska Poręba (October 17–19, 1995).

The Classification and Data Analysis Section has been accepted as a member of the International Federation of Classification Societies. Reports from the conferences are published in the Statistical Review (Przegląd Statystyczny) and in the IFCS Newsletter.
